Direct answer

Current use has nearly quadrupled in two years. Over the same period national obesity prevalence declined from its 2022 peak. Event dated 2026-07-10; published 2026-07-24. Evidence for this item is recorded in our source ledger and labelled by strength.

Answer last reviewed: 2026-07-26Evidence:

The figures

Gallup's National Health and Well-Being Index, surveying 5,065 adults between 28 May and 5 June 2026, found 11% of US adults currently using a GLP-1 for weight loss — roughly 40 million people. In 2024 the same measure was 3%. Fifteen per cent reported having used these drugs at some point.

Across the same period the US adult obesity rate declined from its 2022 peak of 39.9% to 36.4%, and diabetes diagnoses stabilised.

What this establishes, and what it does not

A population-level correlation between rising treatment and falling prevalence. That is suggestive and not conclusive: the measures come from independent datasets, medication use is self-reported, and obesity prevalence moves for many reasons.

What can be said more confidently is that adoption at this scale is unusual in pharmacotherapy, and that it has outpaced the accumulation of long-term evidence. The longest published controlled follow-up in this field is the three-year SURMOUNT-1 prediabetes analysis.

The gap inside the numbers

Fifteen per cent ever-use against 11% current use implies a substantial group who started and stopped — millions of people. Some stopped for side effects; SURMOUNT-1 recorded 4.3% to 7.1% discontinuation for adverse events depending on dose. Some for cost, some because supply changed. The survey does not separate them.

It matters because SURMOUNT-4 found withdrawal followed by 14% weight regain over a year. Population benefit accrues to people who continue, and a meaningful share have not.

Why adoption accelerated when it did

Three barriers fell within eighteen months. Oral options arrived — the Wegovy pill in January 2026, Foundayo in April. Brand prices dropped sharply, with Zepbound now $299 to $449 direct and both approved orals from $149. And Medicare opened access on 1 July 2026 at $50 a month for eligible Part D enrollees.

Needles, price and coverage, removed in sequence.

What it should not change about an individual decision

Scale is not evidence of appropriateness. Forty million users tells you the market moved. It does not tell you whether this suits your history, your tolerability or your circumstances, and it does not shorten the list of questions worth asking a clinician first.

Questions readers actually ask

How many Americans take GLP-1 drugs?

Gallup found 11% of US adults currently using them for weight loss in mid-2026 — roughly 40 million people — with 15% reporting ever-use.

Has obesity fallen because of GLP-1s?

The rate declined from 39.9% in 2022 to 36.4% in 2026, correlating with rising use. Correlation across independent datasets does not establish causation.
